Pakistan-Bangladesh Relationships: Then and Now

Pakistan-Bangladesh-Relationships-Then-and-Now

Though Pakistan and Bangladesh are both South Asian countries and share their religion, traditions, culture, and history, Pakistan-Bangladesh relation is not good.

Bangladesh separated from Pakistan after the violent war of 1971.

The West Pakistan army brutally murdered East Pakistani officers and civilians.

Women were raped. About 3 million people lost their lives in the War of Freedom.

Bangladeshi people fought with their families to get their freedom.

This war of freedom and exploitation of rights by the West Pakistani government

caused a never-ending gap between the two countries.

This gap is still present and cannot be recovered

until Pakistan apologizes for its crimes committed in the 1971 liberation war.

But now both countries need to resolve their issues

and forget their past so that a new, better relationship can be started.

Both countries’ policymakers should be sensitive to each other’s expectations.

For the best relations, security, and prosperity, both countries need to improve their relations.

In recent years, ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan and his government have tried to improve relations with Bangladesh.

For this purpose, Imran Khan sent a congratulation letter to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister on their 50th jubilee Independence Day.

Moreover, he also said that both countries share their social and cultural norms and have the same political history.

It is best for both countries to strengthen their relations as soon as possible.

Besides this, both countries’ younger generations are also excited about

establishing a better relationship between the two Muslim majority countries.

Both countries possess huge potential for the development of bilateral relationships.

There is a huge trade imbalance between the two countries, which should be addressed.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the export rate with Bangladesh stood at $736 million.

While Bangladesh’s export rate stood at only $44 million.

Both countries, Bangladesh and Pakistan, together make up five percent of the total world’s population.

Exchange of scholarships, travel planning, and exchange of social, cultural, and religious thoughts

can help to explore more about each other to strengthen their relationship.

In today’s era, there is a huge competition between countries.

Every country is trying to leave politics behind and strengthen economic relations with each other

to open more economic doors for mutual benefits.

However, for both countries, it is tough to forget the 1971 war.

Bangladesh faced a lot of destruction from Pakistan’s army.

Both countries have sour and bumpy relations.

In 2016, Bangladesh executed lots of Jamat e Islami members for their participation in the 1971 war crimes.

The religious scholars’ execution hurt Pakistan the most, which compelled both countries’ members to sit together at the table to resolve the problems.

But Bangladesh called it Pakistan’s interference in their internal matters.

As a result, both countries’ relations deteriorated to the extent that both countries expelled diplomats from their respective sides.

After taking oath as Prime Minister, Imran Khan tried to improve the Pakistan-Bangladesh relationship.

His phone call with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is proof that Pakistan is willing to be friends.

After this, things improved significantly between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Imran Khan also invited Sheikh Hasina to visit Pakistan.

After this, the Pakistani envoy also met with Sheikh Hasina in December 2021.

During the meeting, Sheikh Hasina also showed a positive response to strengthening the bilateral economic relations with Pakistan.

It showed the establishment of bilateral relations between two countries, which should be continued.

This is an indication of the melting of ice between two groups.

All these efforts show that both countries are warming up their relations.

In the 1971 war, India helped Bangladesh in its worse conditions.

Therefore, Bangladesh has very close and deep relations with India.

Pakistan should not interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.

Pakistan should not call into question India-Bangladesh relations, but rather respect their country.

Because both countries possess historic relations, India helped Bangladesh in its liberation war.

It is noted that both countries are now trying to improve their relations.

In other words, Bangladesh should follow up on the goodwill promoted by Imran Khan.

Both countries should focus on strengthening their economic ties.

It will be beneficial for both countries.

Both countries should try to strengthen not only economic but also social, cultural, and religious ties.

These steps will help to minimize the gap between the two countries that was created by the 1971 war.

Both countries should focus on the well-being of their nations by working together.

Both countries are now taking steps to develop their closer cultural, economic, and diplomatic relations.

No doubt, for both countries, it’s time to rebuild their bilateral relations.

Both countries should conduct meetings in order to improve their economic, social, and cultural relations.

These countries should work together to resolve any issues regarding economic, social, and cultural ties.

Both countries make up five percent of the world’s population.

Not only governments but also the public of both countries should come closer to each other

by developing social, economic, and cultural relationships.

For their mutual benefit, Pakistan Bangladesh should explore themselves to create peaceful environment in both countries.

Now both countries should move forward with their closer social, diplomatic, and economic relations.

It will produce mutually beneficial emotions.

These ties between Bangladesh and Pakistan are key to their mutual benefits.

These are the keys to prosperity between both countries and the region.
