Dhantrayodashi or Dhanteras is often observed one or a few days before Diwali. Lord Kubera and Goddess Laxmi are worshiped on this day as they tend to bestow prosperity and wealth on their devotees. In addition, the festival is dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari. If you’re going about it, there are no stringent rules on performing the pooja at home. Instead, it is believed that if the pooja is performed at a specific time, it can benefit all the family members.

When it comes to the Shubh Muhurat for performing Dhanteras pooja, it’s often between 6:01 pm to 8:33 pm. The celebration and rituals vary from one area to another. Below is the general idea of how people happen to celebrate Dhanteras Pooja at home on such an auspicious occasion.

Significance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras is one of the festivals observed in multiple ways in several communities. It’s an auspicious day, and devotees consider it highly fortunate for purchases and new investments. Most of them also commence their Diwali shopping on this day. Many also state that people observe a five-day celebration of Diwali starting from Dhanteras.

Remember, this festival is not about material wealth. It’s when spirituality and family bonding are given the utmost importance. For most families, it’s a reunion where they prefer gathering at ancestral homes for Diwali. This festival brings more happiness for parents and grandparents as their grandchildren and children arrive from distant places to celebrate.

Why Do People Celebrate Dhanteras?

It is also believed that Kuber pleased Adilaxmi and gave him massive wealth. As a result, people tend to worship Lord Kuber and Goddess Laxmi on this day. Furthermore, it’s also said that Lord Kuber lent a bit of money to Lord Vishnu on this very day for his marriage. Besides, devotees donate money to Lord Vishnu’s temple for him to pay back his loan. In the end, Lord Dhanvantari is worshiped for the excellent health and well-being of the family.

How to Celebrate Dhanteras?

Well, to begin with, the house gets cleaned entirely, and Rangolis is put on the primary entrance and throughout the way to the worship place inside the house. Typically, red footprints are produced to assess the arrival of Goddess Laxmi. Moreover, Laxmi is also worshiped on such a day to offer well-being and prosperity.

Method of Pooja You Must Know

First, a red cloth is taken, and a pot or Kailash is bought to be placed on it. Speaking of which, such a pot is filled with five whole betel nuts and rice with 21 lotus seeds. In addition, a small pot equipped with holy Gangajal and sugar is also placed. While performing prayers, when you face the pot, place the new silver ornament or brick you have brought and Lord Ganesh and Goddess Laxmi in deity or coin form.

It does not end here. In several regions, cows are also fed and worshiped on such an auspicious day. Some people lit Diyas respecting every family member and ancestor. When done, they can float them in a river or pond. Traditionally, women of the family buy ornaments made of gold or silver on this day, and those who can’t buy them, consider buying utensils. In the end, people also believe that anything precious and heavy metal bought on such an occasion is fortunate and auspicious for them and their loved ones.

Remember, if you do not have any type or form of new ornament, consider placing them on the right side. It is essential to understand that everyone follows a different tradition and culture when it comes to celebrating specific festivals like Dhanteras. While some put money in the pot, others tend to light the Diya for Dhanteras pooja. Ensure the Diya remains lit for a minimum of two hours. As a point of gratitude, you can also choose to offer traditional sweets such as Naivaidya to God and Goddess.

Simple Way to Perform Dhanteras Pooja

Yet another seamless way can be incorporated to perform Dhanteras Pooja. Consider taking a small Chowrang or Chowki. You can also draw a small red Swastik with the assistance of Kumkum. You can even perform the pooja by lighting the diya and placing it in the middle of the Swastika.

Wait, there’s more. Consider sprinkling water throughout the Chowki thrice. Place a shell in the diya and then put a little bit of rice before applying kumkum and haldi. Some devotees also situate a one rupee coin and offer flowers at the same time. Once that is done, submit your prayers before a diya for everyone’s good health and well-being.

You can even perform the Japa of Mantra that goes by like this, “AumDhanDhanvantarayeNamha,” at least 108 times. While you reach towards the end, seek blessing from Lord Dhanwantari. Later, you can perform Pooja of Laxmi and Ganesh.
