Companies You Didn’t Know Were in the Technology Field

Technology Field

When people think of the technology field, companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft come to mind. These companies help shape the way we operate with our devices and software at home, in the office, and on the go. But have you ever stopped to wonder what other industries are deeply involved in technology? The answer may surprise you! Here are some little-known companies that operate in the technology field but don’t spring to mind when you think of computers and apps.

Google

One of the most common ways for new companies to get visibility is to attend trade shows. As an industry that relies on creativity and innovation, a trade show can be one of the best ways for businesses to show off their products, connect with customers, and share ideas. Not sure where to start? Here are some companies you may not have known were in the technology field

Apple

Founded in 1976, Apple’s reputation has only continued to grow. It’s been reported that Apple raked in $229 billion in 2018 alone, with over 61% of its revenue coming from sales of iPhones and accessories. With a rich history of developing cutting-edge devices, it’s no wonder that this company is always at the forefront of new technology fields. In fact, Apple was one of the earliest companies to develop laptops with lithium-ion batteries as well as smartphones with curved displays. But despite Apple’s well-established prominence within the tech industry, its presence here can be hard to detect given their lack of trade shows and its closed ecosystem.

Adobe

There are lots of companies out there that you might not know are in the technology field. Some of these include Adobe, Snapchat, and Spotify.

In 1981, a company called Adobe Systems was founded to develop software for personal computers. Today they offer web-based services and mobile devices. For example, their flagship product is an image editor called Photoshop. They also offer programs such as Illustrator and Flash that help customers design websites or create animation content on mobile devices.

Microsoft

A few of the companies that are not often known for being in the technology field are Microsoft, Nike, Sony and even Frito-Lay. These tech companies were established because their products rely on an infrastructure that is largely handled by software or digitalization. One such company is Frito-Lay, who’s main product–Fritos corn chips–is distributed via big retailers and supermarkets that all rely on sophisticated inventory management systems. Maintaining this system needs to be done remotely and outside of normal work hours. The business realized it was easier to develop its own software instead of relying on a third-party solution to solve this problem. Microsoft employs 70000 people across more than 130 countries and has been operating since 1975.

Facebook

It’s so easy to type technology field into Facebook and just have a look at what companies are there. I was fascinated by some of the ones that I’d never heard of before – and now I feel more educated on new technology-related products! Companies like Flux, dismantler, and On Hub offer great products that you may not know about if you’re not plugged into technology.

Have you been thinking about getting a smartwatch? There are plenty of watches on this list that would be perfect for your needs, whether it’s security or fitness related. Apple Watch is offered through all these companies (among others) meaning there are a variety of different prices points for all budgets!

Oracle

Known as a competitor to IBM, Oracle is also one of the leading companies in technology. The company’s first offering was Oracle Database, a relational database management system (RDBMS) they eventually became known for and changed their name to reflect. In 1979, Larry Ellison and his friend and colleague Robert Miner developed Oracle Database, with support from CIA funds. While many of its biggest competitors were using flat files or hierarchical systems like IMS or RODOS, Ellison decided to employ a relational database that could be directly updated by users, eliminating cumbersome data handling processes. This would make data entry quicker for customers, allow for higher efficiency when compiling data between related tables, and make it easier to sort information by breaking tasks into manageable chunks.

Verizon

In 1877, Bell Telephone Company formed and became the first publicly traded company to provide home phone service. In 1983, it launched wireless and long-distance services. Now, Verizon Wireless is an America-based wireless communications business. It offers a variety of technology including smartphones, tablets, mobile internet connections and digital media. This is just one of many companies you didn’t know were involved in the technology field!
