The NeighborWorks Laredo organization is inviting those people who are going through a difficult economic situation due to COVID-19, they should visit their office where there are qualified personnel who can guide them to obtain funds to cover this type of debt.
If due to the Covid-19 pandemic you fell behind on your mortgage, rent, property taxes or homeowners association dues, you should know that NeighborWorks Laredo can assist you in the process of making use of federal funds. and state funds available to the Laredo community that may be able to help you pay off some or all of your debt.
Elizabeth Alonzo-Villarreal, CEO of NeighborWorks Laredo, said that people who are going through a difficult economic situation due to COVID-19 should visit her office where there are qualified personnel who can guide them to obtain funds to cover this type of debt.
“If Covid-19 impacted their income because they were laid off from their jobs, had their working hours reduced, or had to stop working, and people can show that they have not been able to catch up as a result of this event, they can qualify up to with 40 thousand dollars for the mortgage payment”, expressed Alonzo-Villarreal.
He added that these funds are also available for those who have not been able to pay their rent, taxes or fees from the homeowners’ association.
“They only have to show that they were impacted by the pandemic, showing what their income and expenses are, such as bills for services such as electricity, water, etc.”, he detailed.
Alonzo-Villarreal said that people should take advantage of these funds available to the community.
“When the funds are not used, these funds are returned to be applied to other programs, so it is very important that people come to our office to help them,” he said.
He added that for one of the programs, the application to access these funds can only be done online and NeighborWorks Laredo has the means to help carry out this process.
“Anyone would think that we all have access to a computer, but we don’t. There are people who are older adults or people with limited resources who do not have access to a computer or the Internet and that’s where we come in, because we have staff who can fill out the applications for them and we make sure that the application is well done, since there are cases in which, if some information is missing, the request can be rejected and you have to do it again, ”he explained.
Alonzo-Villarreal said they have implemented this mortgage and rent default program for about three months.
“For the mortgage program for Covid-19 we have been able to help about 80 people to fill out their applications for mortgage payments and about 70 for rent payments,” he said. “We have managed to bring 15 people up to date with their rent payments.”
She also launched a call to property owners whose tenants present debts.
“They can send their tenants to do the application process and then the owners can receive the payment of the rents owed directly from the program,” he recommended.
He added that those people who are, for reasons other than Covid, at risk of losing their home due to non-payment, can go to NeighborWorks Laredo to request advice and learn about the different programs that are available.
“If people can’t afford their home for any other reason, it’s very important that they come and learn about the different programs we have available. Our adviser Patricia Ayala, who is a certified counselor, helps establish communication with the company or bank with whom you have the mortgage and then start a negotiation process”, she highlighted. “We have assisted more than 200 families so that they do not lose their homes.”
Lastly, Alonzo-Villarreal encouraged the community to learn about the services that NeighborWorks Laredo offers to assist the public in the area of housing. All services provided by NeighborWorks Laredo are free.
