Animals in Zoo
Donkeys, goats, sheep and rabbits are all common pet zoo animals. Lemurs, which are primates that are native to Madagascar aren’t found in the majority of petting zoos. Since they are wild animals, they are extremely dangerous to handle and can cause health problems and physical dangers. La Bourbanais, a zoo located in Pleugueneuc, France, instructs visitors not to touch lemurs, however this little girl couldn’t resist the adorable animals.
Zoos are places where animals are kept in captivity and put in public display for visitors to see. The term “zoo” is an abbreviation meaning “zoological park.” Zoos have diverse species of animals indigenous to all regions in the Earth.
While people have had wild animals for hundreds of years, the collections were not always as impressive as the modern Zoos. Zoos first came into existence as private collections of the wealthy to display their wealth. The private collections were referred to as menageries.
Wall carvings from Egypt and Mesopotamia provide proof that rulers and aristocrats had menageries from as early as 2500 BCE. They kept records of their trips to far-off places to bring exotic animals home, including elephants, giraffes and dolphins. They also brought birds. There is evidence to suggest that the ancient Zoo owners employed animal handlers to ensure that the animals were healthy and reproducing.

Zoos were also present in later civilizations like China, Greece, and Rome. The Aztec Emperor Montezuma II, in what is now Mexico was the owner of one of the first collection of animals within the Western Hemisphere. The collection was destroyed by Hernan Cortes in the Spanish conquer in 1520.
Modern Zoos
The modern-day model for public zoo gained popularity in the 18th century, which was the Age of Enlightenment. It was the Age of Enlightenment was a period in European history during which science rationality, reason, and logic were promoted as ideals for the government and society. The focus on science during the Age of Enlightenment extended to the field of zoology.
In this period people began to study animals for research reasons. Researchers wanted to study the behavior of animals and their anatomy. To accomplish this, zookeepers and scientists were required to house animals in locations that were close to or similar to the natural habitats of animals.
A first and modern-day zoo constructed in 1793.
Was inaugurated at Paris, France. It was home to the menageries of French arrogant aristocrats, which included the queen and the king were taken over by the people who were part of the French Revolution and relocated to the Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes. It’s an active and well-known animal park in downtown Paris.
Early zoos , such as those at the Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes were more like museums with living animals rather than natural habitats. The animals were kept in tiny displays, with as many species as the space could accommodate.
Zoos today are designed to educate and entertain visitors, yet they place an emphasis on research conducted by scientists and conservation of species. It is becoming more popular towards providing animals with more space and re-creating natural habitats. Zoos are generally monitored and controlled through the authorities.
Urban or Suburban Zoos
Zoos in urban areas, which are located in cities of a large size, look like the smaller zoos that were in vogue 200 years ago. They are often located in the city’s middle, which makes their expansion challenging. There is a limited space for urban zoos to expand as a majority of buildings of the zoo are historic landmarks that are not able to be demolished or altered.
At many urban zoos animal exhibits are housed in tiny enclosures. Animal activists have argued that the confinement of animals in urban environments is cruel due to noisy conditions, cramped spaces, and polluting.
Zoos that are urban are prevalent in Europe Zoos are also common are located in the United States developed as sprawling parks in suburbs that are located outside of cities. Zoos that are open to the public allow animals to roam around and offer more natural habitats. This technique for creating real-life habitats is known as landscape immersion.
It is the San Diego Zoo, in southern California is the largest animal park of its kind in the United States. It is a suburban zoo which has more than 4,500 animals (800 species) within the 0.4 sq km (100 acres). Landscape immersion separates species into natural environments, including that of the Tundra (with reindeer and the polar bears) or the bamboo woodland (featuring pandas.) It is home to the San Diego Zoo also includes the wild animal park which is larger (almost eight square kilometers, or more than 2,000 acres.)

Safari Parks
More expansive than open-range and urban safari parks are places where visitors can travel in their own vehicles to view wild animals that are not native to the area in huge enclosures. These parks give the animals more space than tiny enclosures that are typical of zoos.
Fuji Safari Park, in Susono
Japan, offers the traditional zoo, and a safari park that is drive-through. Visitors can drive their own cars or ride on one or the buses that are available at the park. Fuji Safari Park offers night tours so that visitors can observe nocturnal animals and animals who are in motion during the night. Visitors to the park can also feed certain animals, like lions, through bus windows. There are parks that do not even permit feeding animals.
Safari parks, particularly in Europe are usually part of theme resorts or parks. They have golf courses as well as fairground attractions such as rides and games.
Game Reserves
Game reserves are vast swaths of land where ecosystems and species native to the area are protected. They permit animals to reproduce and live in a natural way. Animals are free to roam around freely.
The 1800s were when trips for hunting “big games” (large animals like the lion, elephant or elephant) was known as”a safari. While some game reserves permit traditional hunting safaris some restrict guests to the “photo safari” where guests can take photos, but not animal.
All game reserves are safe from hunting that is illegal which poses the biggest threat to threatened species. Hunts that are legal are controlled by the federal government. Hunters need to purchase licenses and are restricted to the kind and quantity of animals they may hunt. Hunters without licenses, slaughter animals to obtain important body organs. Elephants for instance get killed by poachers to obtain the ivory in their tusks.
